About the museum
The Dark Church is regarded as the most important building in the Göreme Open Air Museum, and it has its own special entrance. Cappadocia's valleys, where pilgrimage tourism thrives, contain more than 600 churches carved into soft volcanic rock, and this one stands out among them for the vividness of its frescoes.
It belongs to the church complex at Göreme and dates from the late eleventh or early twelfth century. It gets its name because only a little light enters through a small window in the narthex. That lack of light has been a blessing: the colours of the paintings have resisted time and remain bright.
The church has a cross plan, with barrel-vaulted arms, cross vaults, a central dome, four columns and three apses. A curved stair on the north side climbs to the rectangular, barrel-vaulted narthex. The walls hold many important depictions.

- The Dark Church is inside the Göreme Open Air Museum, but it has its own entrance, so check how it is ticketed on the day.
- Müzekart holders are entitled to a discounted entry. Interior lighting is limited, so allow your eyes time to adjust.
