A modern museum at the entrance to the ancient site of Troy, telling the city's layered story through artefacts, dioramas and touch screens, with a sculpture garden.
The Troy Museum stands at the entrance to the ancient city of Troy, in Tevfikiye village near Çanakkale, on a site UNESCO added to its World Heritage List in 1998. Building began in 2013, paused in 2015, resumed in 2017 and the doors opened in October 2018. It was formally inaugurated in March 2019 and has about 3,000 square metres of exhibition space.
The visit starts on the descending ramp, where wall niches introduce the different layers of Troy through gravestones, large sculptures, staged scenes and big photographs. A circulation band at the entrance then prepares visitors for the exhibition floors, explaining archaeology itself, including dating methods and terms such as Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, mound and conservation, through diagrams, texts and interactive displays.
The objects range widely: marble sculpture, sarcophagi, inscriptions, altars, milestones and early stone axes, along with pottery, metal vessels, gold, weapons, coins, bone tools, glass bracelets, ornaments, perfume bottles and small tear bottles. Dioramas use light to stage scenes, and touch screens and animations add background. In the garden, stone finds such as sarcophagi, columns, steles and capitals are displayed among the planting.
All the collections of the former Çanakkale Archaeological Museum were moved here, so the old building is no longer open, and the Çanakkale museum directorate now works from this address.
