Denizli City Museum

Denizli City Museum

A 2024 museum in a restored 1940s workshop complex, telling Denizli's story from Homo erectus to trade, crafts and city life across nine halls.

About the museum

Opened in 2024, Denizli City Museum keeps the city's cultural memory and has quickly become one of its landmarks. It fills about 2,500 square metres of covered space and nine exhibition halls.

The building itself is part of the story. Erected in the 1940s as the workshop units of the Yusuf Batur Vocational School, it was designed by Selçuk Milar, assistant and student of the German architect Paul Bonatz. Reflecting the early Republic's economic conditions, it is plain and modern, built from concrete and local stone, with three parallel wings and courtyard-like voids. After years of neglect it was fully restored.

The halls take you from the Stone Age to the present. The first covers early city history: Denizli Man (Homo erectus), fossils, Roman and Byzantine times and the arrival of the Turks. The second follows the Seljuk, Inanç, Germiyan and Ottoman eras, with coins and inscriptions from local mosques. The third turns to urban life and trade: finds from the İlbadı cemetery, models of historic buildings, the Ahi tradition and traditional trades, plus the sailcloth woven in Buldan for ships.

Tips

  • The museum is a good starting point before visiting Hierapolis or Laodikeia.
