Germanicia Mosaic Area

Germanicia Mosaic Area

A protected archaeological zone in Kahramanmaraş where late Roman and early Byzantine floor mosaics were found in the ancient city of Germanicia. Temporarily closed.

About the museum

Germanicia was the ancient city on the site of today's Kahramanmaraş. Its rich floor mosaics were first found in 2001 in the Bağlarbaşı neighbourhood and excavated by the Kahramanmaraş Museum. More mosaics turned up in 2007, and finds from excavations in 2009-2010 supported the view that this was ancient Germanicia.

The zone covers about 140 hectares in the Dulkadiroğlu district, covering several neighbourhoods. It was registered as a third-degree archaeological site in 2010, and since then 31 places have been upgraded to first-degree sites, of which seven have been excavated.

The mosaic area in Bağlarbaşı was excavated in 2014-2015 and opened to visitors in 2018. According to sources of the time the mosaics belong to the late Roman and early Byzantine periods, and they mirror the political, social and economic life of the city then.

Tips

  • The official page currently says the area is temporarily closed to visitors; confirm before travelling.
