Sakarya Museum

Sakarya Museum

A rebuilt early-20th-century house in Adapazarı where Atatürk met his mother in June 1922, now a small museum of the region.

About the museum

The Sakarya Museum occupies a house that Major Baha Bey, head of the local military recruitment office, had built between 1910 and 1915 as a three-storey home with a basement. It later passed to Hasan Cavit Bey, a close friend of Atatürk and a member of parliament.

The house matters to the story of the War of Independence. In June 1922, during army inspections before the Great Offensive, Mustafa Kemal stayed here and met his mother. The 1967 earthquake damaged the building badly. Registered as an example of civil architecture in 1983, it was expropriated by the Ministry and rebuilt in reinforced concrete, with its outer appearance faithful to the original and its interior completely changed.

It stands opposite the railway station on Milli Egemenlik Street, in a plot of about 1,290 square metres including the garden, so it is easy to reach and to combine with a stroll around the city centre.

Tips

  • The museum stands opposite the railway station, so it is easy to fit in when arriving by train.
