Batman's archaeology museum, with objects from the Ilısu Dam rescue digs, Hasankeyf finds and an open-air Museum Park where visitors can try excavation.
On September 30, 2026 the Ministry’s listing showed this museum as closed to visitors. Check the official page before planning a visit.
Batman Museum, named after Mehmet Cabir Alper, has three exhibition halls: Palaeolithic-Neolithic, Ilısu and Hasankeyf. About 500 works from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages are displayed. The museum directed seven rescue excavations at mounds in Batman and Siirt that were due to go under the waters of the Ilısu Dam.
The most important item is the set of gaming pieces found at Başur Höyük. Other highlights are the "standing stone" from Gusir Höyük, the bronze grave goods from Başur Höyük and the figure of the god Bes from Hasankeyf. A projection room shows documentaries about the digs, and the museum also has a library on archaeology, culture and art history and a laboratory where excavated objects are restored.
The Museum Park in the garden is a first for Türkiye: reconstructed historic living spaces let visitors learn by doing. It shows house models from the Gusir, Gre Amer and Kuriki mounds, burial traditions, the Başur gaming stones, the Artuqid Gate of Hasankeyf, a medieval home and village life. Practical excavation areas teach schoolchildren how digs work, with archaeologists on hand, and a short film and simulations are aimed at younger visitors. The first phase of Hasankeyf Museum, part of the same directorate, has also opened.

According to the Ministry’s listing it opens at 08:00 and closes at 17:00 (last entry 16:30). Closed: Monday.
