The ruins of an ancient highland capital near Gölhisar, with a theatre, odeon, stadium, agora, temple and monumental street, once the head of a four-city league.
Kibyra lies in the hills of Gölhisar, about 106 km west of the city of Burdur. It was one of the great cities of the region: first tied to Lycia, it later became the capital of a league of four cities with Balbura, Boubon and Oinanda. The city and its territory, known as Kibyratis, had a population said to exceed 100,000, and it could field an army of 30,000 foot soldiers and 2,000 horsemen.
From about 300 BC until Roman times Kibyratis lived as a largely self-governing state, before passing to the province of Phrygia and then to the Roman province of Asia. The settlement area is very large, and much of the ancient town plan still stands out among the trees and fields.
Today you can see the theatre, the odeon, the stadium, the temple, the agora and a monumental street. Give yourself time to walk between them: the distances are long, the setting is quiet and the scale of the ruins says a lot about the city's former wealth.
