Keskin Sulu Cave Underground City

Keskin Sulu Cave Underground City

A 285 m rock-cut cave complex at Keskin, Kırıkkale, with three levels, ancient rain pools and a section of about 115 m open to visitors.

About the museum

Sulu Cave lies in the Arzu Bayırı locality of Keskin, about a kilometre from the centre of town, north-west of the settlement. It has been open as an archaeological site linked to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara since 2013.

The cave is 285 metres long, up to 25 metres deep, with a ceiling that varies between one and four metres. Inside, humidity averages 85 percent and the temperature is around 18 degrees. It has three linked floors and three galleries, called the pool hall, the cube gallery and the lower mine gallery. Marble makes up one part and mudstone and sandstone another.

The entrance and pool hall are natural formations. In the Early Christian period the pool hall served as a settlement and temporary shelter, while the cube and lower mine galleries were mined until recent times. Ancient pools up to two metres deep were built to gather rainwater. The section that covers the pooled area, where water collects, is 115 metres long and can be visited.

Tips

  • Bring a light jacket; the cave stays cool and humid all year.
  • The site is closed on Mondays; check the official Ministry of Culture page for current hours.
