A five-floor museum opened in 2023 that walks through Afyon's past from the Chalcolithic to the Early Republic and the War of Independence.
Afyonkarahisar Museum has its roots in the early years of the Republic. A local society of antiquities lovers began gathering old objects in the Taş Medrese, the collection became an official museum depot in 1931 and a museum directorate in 1933. For nearly four decades it worked there as a mixed archaeology and ethnography museum before moving into a second building in 1971. The current building opened on 18 April 2023.
The permanent display is arranged over five floors in chronological order, covering the Chalcolithic, Bronze Age, Hittite, Phrygian, Lydian, Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Ottoman and Early Republican periods. Ceramics, stone and marble, bone, glass, metal vessels and other objects show how people in this area lived, believed, produced and traded from about 3000 BC onwards.
Afyon is famous for marble, and the museum has marble statues, sarcophagi, gravestones and architectural pieces that explain the craft and the trade. Reconstructions, realistic mannequins and multimedia make the displays lively, and the fifth floor is devoted to the War of Independence. Roman and later stone works also stand in the garden.
